Ever heard of Daymond John? In case you haven’t, Daymond John is the founder of FUBU clothing line. He’s also one of the Sharks of the TV program Shark’s Tank.
What does he have to do with anything? Well, Mr. John was interviewed last year by Lewis Howes on his podcast. What he revealed about his goal-setting process is what inspired the article you’re reading right now.
When asked to specify one thing that he would do on a daily basis, the answer was a bit unexpected. John revealed that he sets 9 specific goals that may include anything related to family, health or business. He reads these goals 5 days each week at the least. His plan consists of starting each day and ending it with the goals that he’s set on his mind.
One of the things that most of us can take away from this is that we have to start taking our goals more seriously. A lot of people set several goals but never reach the point of fully accomplishing them. One thing that can help out with this problem is writing them down in detail in a plan sheet.
But even with that, the problem of remaining consistent can still persist. A piece of paper is worthless without determination. As explained by Daymond John, setting your goals matters, but nothing is achievable without adopting a consistent working plan.
Let’s Reset Things
We’ve only dipped our toes into 2019, and It felt as if we’ve skipped right through 2018 without experiencing any of it. One question to ask yourself is whether or not you’ve accomplished your 2018 goals, if you’ve ever had any. What goals have you set for this year?
If you haven’t set anything, then now is a pretty good time to do so. And it’s never too late. Sure, it’s better to jump into a new year with all of your resolutions set in place, but better late than never.
And when it comes to the goals plan, it’s not meant to be a strict list of guidelines. It’s just there to be a launching point and a finishing line. If you’ve gotten off track in your quest before, we’ve got for you 12 simple steps to follow that we’ve set a number of years ago.
Hopefully, these steps can make it a bit easier and help you be more focused during your journey to reach your goals. But we cannot promise a magical spell that will make everything alright. Nothing is guaranteed, only that with determination, you’ll go farther than you think.
Achieving goals takes hard work, investing time and making sacrifices. You’re the only one responsible for making it happen.
12 Simple Steps
Dedicate some alone time for goal development
First things first, get away from everything; all of the distractions and the noises. Find a peaceful place and start planning out your goals.
You’ll also want to stay away from electronic devices. This means no mobile, no computers. Let your entourage know about this so that they would understand your reason for seclusion. You don’t want to be disturbed.
1. Write Down the Goals
It’s simple really. When you do so, let your writing be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Reinforcing, Trackable. The process of writing them down can make things seem clearer as it gives you a tangible route that guides your progress.
2. Set the success measures
3. Set the possible success opportunities
Staying motivated is key, and this is one way to assure that. Set a list of 3 or 4 opportunities or even more if you’d like. This list will be one of the most important motivating factors, especially when you find yourself in times of desperation and doubt.
4. Know the obstacles in your way
You’ve done everything as mentioned exactly in the previous step, and now you’re expecting to start off on a smooth ride to success. But that won’t e the case because you’ll encounter a number of hurdles along the way.
It can make the journey less troublesome if you know what to expect and what you’re going to come across. Even then, some unexpected issues may reveal themselves as you progress. This will be a test for your level of focus and determination, a test that you must not fail.
5. Outline small actions that can sum up to a larger goal
You might be dealing with one huge milestone that you want to achieve. In this case, it’ll be best to break it down to smaller manageable achievements. Looking up to one behemoth of an accomplishment can be intimidating and overwhelming.
Having to deal with smaller action steps makes the big milestone seem more tangible and achievable.
6. Have a list of needed skills, resources and people
You may not be completely ready on your own to reach the desired goal. You can be lacking in a specific type of skill set. You might have to learn new things through some studying or even practice some of your old rusty skills. In any way, don’t be ashamed or too arrogant to ask for help and seek it out. That’s why you need to identify the resources and the people that can hel^p you out throughout the way.
7. Generate new habits
Reaching a goal requires you to stick to doing several actions. These actions can be so essential to achieving the goal that it would require you to turn them to habits. Having a healthy routine is critical for reaching a desired state of being in any case. But that won’t be easy. Making new habits isn’t. It requires consistency and determination. You might be motivated enough for the first few days, but if you don’t latch on to that determination, you’ll find yourself back at square one.
8. Do
So you’ve planned everything perfectly, you’ve got everything in place, and you know what to expect. Now is the time to take action. You cannot wait for people to push you to do things or for the right opportunity to come along. You create the opportunities by taking action now before later. If you don’t, your goal will remain nothing but an idea.
9. Regularly monitor your progress and goals
As you move along the journey, it’s always beneficial to take a step back and assess your progress in light of the desired goal. This will allow you to choose the right decisions in your development and know exactly how much care you’ll need to put I every action. It can even bring to realize that one of your goals does not fit well anymore with your vision for the future and that it will have to be crossed out. Assessing your situation will ensure that you remain on the right path.
10. Give yourself rewards
This serves as a great motivator to keep you going throughout the process. Set a number of checkpoints along the way at which you will reward yourself when you get to reach them. This incentive will keep the experience fun and worthwhile until you reach the final goal. Don’t overdo it or it will lose all meaning and be worthless. Still, small achievements deserve recognition.
11. Always forward
Here are 5 motivators to never back down
- No matter what happens, no matter how many times you fail or get slow down, be committed.
- Keep yourself in an entourage made up of encouraging and motivating people
- Never take a day off from achieving your goals. Always show up to do something that will propel you forward.
- Take full advantage of your skills and talents.
- Never pay attention to the voice asking you to give up
As we’ve mentioned before, consistency and determination are the keys to all of the success. By adopting that mindset and following these 12 steps, you’ll be closer than ever before to achieving what you’ve always sought to have.
